When Thomas Macqueen commissioned two ships in 1824 to carry people, animals, supplies and domestic and farming implements to NSW to establish his new estate, they were destined to make history in their own right. Until this time, all ships coming to the new colony were essentially convict transports. However, these ships were the first to make the journey carrying “free men” only. They were mostly Scots and so there was a large preponderance towards all things Scot in those days. We hear little about the contribution they made to Australian history because they were “free” whereas history centres mostly on the Irish who came in chains and tended to shape more of the character that we are today, resisting authority, a virtue that tends to make us revere the “Ned Kellys” of the world, fighting corrupt officials and excessive governance. Reminders of the home country they left behind include a painting of roses and a crystal perfume decanter, the like of which they may have previously seen on a mistress’s boudoir table—the type of object that, if stolen, could see you transported for 7 years hard labour to the colonies!!
